London’s “Cycling Revolution”

Anytime the words cycling and revolution can be used next to each other is a good time in my mind. London Mayor Boris Johnson is on a path to revolutionize cycling in the city. He hopes to promote a 400 percent increase in cycling in London between 2000 and 20205. The first initiatives in the cycling revolution are in place and in my mind, they are bold steps. It seems Mayor Johnson is aggresively pursuing the goal through programs and infrastructure and I am in nothing short of awe of his plan.

The first completed phase in the revolution is a series of bike superhighways. Two bike paths have opened leading to and from London. 12 bike highways are planned giving commuters easy access to the city without the need for a car.

The second initiative is a cycle hire program. Much like programs in Paris and Montreal, Londoners will be able to rent  bicycles to get around the city. Bikes can be picked up and dropped off at any of 400 docking stations.

This sort of progressive thinking by an elected official brings a big smile to my face. I have just one message for London commuters, go forth and embrace the cycle revolution!  And make sure to Be Seen while you’re at it.
